More than 2,000 families were left homeless after a 16-hour fire tore through a residential area in Parola Compound, Binondo, Manila, destroying more than 1,200 houses, the city government said.
The Manila City government reported that 2,134 families, or 7,123 individuals, were affected by the fire that razed 1,266 houses in Barangay 275.
Affected residents are temporarily staying at the Delpan Evacuation Center, where the City Social Welfare and Development Department (CSWD) has distributed relief goods and food packs.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire broke out at around 3 p.m. on May 23 and quickly escalated to Task Force Charlie, indicating a major fire response.
Firefighters declared the blaze out at around 7 a.m. the following day.
No deaths or injuries were reported, but the fire left thousands of residents displaced as authorities worked to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance.
The BFP said investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.
