Remulla to Bato: Face ICC Allegations, Don’t Run From the Law

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla on Friday challenged Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa to face the allegations against him after the former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief sought refuge at the Senate amid an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Remulla expressed disbelief over Dela Rosa’s move, saying it was ironic for a former head of the national police force to avoid law enforcement authorities.

“Nagtataka ako sa kanya. Naging chief PNP siya, tumatakbo siya sa batas. Humarap siya,” Remulla said.

The Ombudsman said public officials, especially those who once led law enforcement agencies, should be ready to answer accusations through the proper legal process.

“Kapag ginugulo ang mundo, managot ka sa iyong mga gawain. Sabihin mo kung wala ka talagang kasalanan, harapin mo,” he said.

Remulla also questioned whether Dela Rosa’s actions were fitting for a senator and former police chief.

“Anong klaseng tao ‘yan, di ba? Ganyan ba dapat ang senador natin, tumatakbo sa batas? Is that the hero we want to portray?” he said.

Dela Rosa, who served as PNP chief during the Duterte administration’s drug war, has been linked to the ICC investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed in connection with the anti-drug campaign during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Remulla said Dela Rosa should confront the accusations instead of evading the warrant, stressing that running away only fuels suspicion.

“Flight is an indication of guilt,” the Ombudsman said.

The remarks came as public attention remained focused on developments at the Senate following reports that Dela Rosa used the chamber as a shield against possible arrest.

Remulla said Dela Rosa must submit himself to the legal process and answer the allegations directly, particularly because of his background as the country’s former top police official.
