A 54-year-old farmer was rescued after being caught in the crossfire during an encounter between government troops and communist armed groups in Motiong, Samar.
Troops from the 46th Infantry Battalion (46IB) and the 81st Division Reconnaissance Company (81DRC) were conducting a focused military operation on April 24, 2026, in the vicinity of Barangays Pamamas-an and Caulayanan when they encountered armed group members. During the firefight, the farmer, identified as Samuel Gabane, was safely extracted from the area.
He was immediately provided with food and initial assistance by the responding troops.
Authorities said Gabane was initially unable to provide clear personal details. The 46IB coordinated with the Motiong Municipal Police Station, with support from legal officers of the 8th Infantry Division, to ensure proper handling and identification.
He was later turned over to the Motiong police, where his identity was verified. His family, along with barangay officials from Barangay Victory in Jiabong, Samar, subsequently confirmed his identity.
Gabane was brought to the Rural Health Unit in Jiabong for a medical examination, while police documented the incident, including a blotter entry and required reports.
His family expressed gratitude to the responding personnel for ensuring his safety and safe return.
The incident underscores ongoing efforts to protect civilians during military operations.
