Survey Shows Public Support House Performance, Sara Duterte Impeachment

A majority of Filipinos continue to approve of the performance of the House of Representatives and support the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, according to the latest Tangere survey cited by Deputy Speaker Jay Khonghun.

Khonghun said the results show that the public recognizes the work being done by lawmakers in the House.

“Nakikita ng ating mga kababayan na natatrabaho ang kanilang mga inihalal na kinatawan sa Kongreso. Nagpapasalamat po kami sa patuloy ninyong suporta,” Khonghun said.

(Our countrymen can see that their elected representatives in Congress are working. We are grateful for your continued support.)

The Tangere survey showed that the House maintained a 51 percent satisfaction rating and a 52 percent trust rating, while negative sentiment toward the chamber declined, with dissatisfaction dropping to 29 percent and distrust easing to 30 percent.

The poll, conducted from May 12 to 13, coincided with the House impeachment proceedings that led to the formal transmittal of the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte to the Senate.

The survey also found that 52 percent of respondents supported the impeachment proceedings, while 37 percent opposed them.

Khonghun said the numbers indicate that the public has been closely following the impeachment process and continues to support it.

“This is consistent with previous polls showing that they want Vice President Sara Duterte to face an impeachment trial for alleged constitutional offenses, including graft and corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust, alleged ill-gotten wealth, failure to declare certain wealth, and threats she made against President Marcos Jr., the First Lady, and former Speaker Martin Romualdez,” he said.

Following the House’s transmittal of the impeachment articles, Khonghun said lawmakers are hoping the Senate would immediately proceed with the trial as required under the Constitution.

“We are banking on the statement of new Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano that the Senate would conduct a trial forthwith,” he added.

Khonghun also attributed the House’s trust and satisfaction ratings to the leadership of Speaker Bojie Dy and Majority Leader Sandro Marcos.

“They kept all of us working. Under their guidance, the House has passed 20 priority legislative measures endorsed by the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council,” he said.

Khonghun added that the public also recognizes that the House continued to pass key legislation while processing the impeachment complaints against the Vice President.

“The people see and recognize that we not only processed the impeachment complaints filed against the Vice President, but we also worked on measures that will help our people, especially the poor,” he said.

Among the LEDAC-backed measures already approved by the House is the law resetting the first regular elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
