AFP Welcomes ASEAN Maritime Pact, New PH-Based Maritime Center

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Monday welcomed ASEAN’s adoption of new maritime security agreements and the planned establishment of the ASEAN Maritime Center in the Philippines, describing the move as a major step toward strengthening regional security cooperation.

The AFP said the initiative supports the Philippines’ push for a rules-based international order and greater regional stability amid growing maritime challenges in Southeast Asia, including tensions in the West Philippine Sea.

Under the agreement, the ASEAN Maritime Center will serve as a regional hub for cooperation on maritime security, freedom of navigation, environmental protection, disaster response, and other shared concerns affecting member states.

Military officials said the center is expected to improve coordination among ASEAN countries in addressing transnational threats and maritime incidents across the region.

“The AFP remains committed to work with our ASEAN counterparts to ensure a secure, peaceful, and prosperous West Philippine Sea,” the military said in a statement.

The AFP also emphasized the importance of integrating climate action, digital innovation, and disaster preparedness into broader maritime security efforts as Southeast Asian nations continue facing both geopolitical and environmental challenges.

The Philippines has repeatedly pushed for stronger regional cooperation and adherence to international law in addressing maritime disputes, particularly in the West Philippine Sea.
