Authorities seized more than P9.1-million worth of smuggled cigarettes and arrested five suspects in separate anti-smuggling operations conducted in Basilan and Maguindanao del Sur on May 7, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

In Isabela City, Basilan, police officers conducting a mobile patrol in Barangay Menzi intercepted two men allegedly transporting assorted illicit cigarettes. The operation resulted in the confiscation of smuggled tobacco products estimated to be worth P5.8 million.

In a separate operation in Datu Paglas, Maguindanao del Sur, joint personnel from the Regional Maritime Unit 12 and the local police station arrested three suspects linked to the alleged transport of illegal cigarettes.

Authorities recovered around 750 reams of cigarettes and seized two vehicles believed to have been used in the operation. The confiscated items and vehicles were estimated to be worth more than P3.3 million.

All five suspects are now under police custody while investigators prepare the necessary charges and documentation.

The PNP said the operations are part of its intensified drive against smuggling and illegal trade under the government’s campaign to protect legitimate businesses and strengthen border security.

PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended the operating units for the successful operations and emphasized the importance of sustained law enforcement efforts against illicit trade.

He said the PNP will continue conducting intelligence-driven and lawful operations in coordination with partner-agencies and local government units to curb smuggling activities across the country.

The police force also assured the public that anti-smuggling operations will remain a priority as part of its nationwide peace and order campaign.
