Bennie Boatwright, Matthew Ramos Seek Filipino Citizenship to Represent PH

Two foreign-born athletes seeking to represent the Philippines on the global stage have gained strong backing from senators, as legislative measures to grant them Filipino citizenship move forward in Congress.

During a hearing of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, chaired by Senator Francis Pangilinan, lawmakers expressed support for the naturalization bids of basketball player Bennie Boatwright and wrestler Matthew James Ramos.

Pangilinan said both athletes have demonstrated a clear intention to represent the Philippines in high-level international competitions, noting that their applications reflect a shared commitment between the country and the athletes themselves.

Boatwright, a 6-foot-10 forward from Los Angeles, California, has played in various international leagues and previously helped the San Miguel Beermen secure a championship. Despite facing injuries and setbacks earlier in his career, he has continued to pursue opportunities to compete in the Philippines and is now seeking to don the national colors.

Ramos, meanwhile, brings an accomplished background in wrestling. Born in Illinois to a Filipino father, he rose to prominence as a cadet world champion and an NCAA All-American while competing for Purdue University. He has also expressed a strong desire to represent the Philippines in international wrestling competitions.

Lawmakers emphasized that granting citizenship to foreign athletes is not only a recognition of their skills but also a responsibility, as they are expected to carry the country’s flag in global sporting events.

Senator Jinggoy Estrada said such opportunities come with the duty to uphold national pride and perform at the highest level, adding that athletes with both elite talent and a strong connection to Filipino identity can elevate the country’s standing in international competitions.

The proposals are being deliberated under separate House and Senate bills that aim to fast-track the naturalization of both athletes through legislative action.

Supporters of the measures also highlighted the broader goal of strengthening Philippine sports by improving athlete development and expanding the country’s presence in global competitions.
