CAAP: Eastern Samar Airports Remain Operational After 6.1 Quake

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) assured the public on Monday that airports in Eastern Samar and nearby provinces remain operational and structurally sound following the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that struck the region on May 4.

In its initial assessment, CAAP said no damage was reported in key airport facilities, including Calbayog, Borongan, Catbalogan, Hilongos, Catarman, Guiuan, and Ormoc airports. However, Borongan Airport experienced a temporary power outage, with restoration efforts underway.

Following the quake, CAAP immediately deployed Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) teams and security personnel to conduct inspections and ensure the safety of airport operations.

“CAAP assures the public that all necessary measures have been undertaken to ensure the safety of our airports and personnel,” said CAAP Director General Retired Lt. Gen. Raul del Rosario.

He added that the agency is maintaining close coordination with airport managers for continuous monitoring and prompt resolution of any operational issues that may arise.

“We are also coordinating closely with our airport managers for continuous monitoring, assessment, and the immediate resolution of operational concerns,” del Rosario said.

CAAP said it is working in line with directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Department of Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safe and uninterrupted airport operations in affected areas.

Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and local conditions while ensuring that aviation facilities remain secure and ready for normal operations.
