The Armed Forces of the Philippines has expressed concern over China’s test launch of a strategic ballistic missile from a nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific Ocean, warning that the move could heighten security anxieties in the region.
In a statement, the AFP said the launch by the People’s Liberation Army Navy demonstrated an advanced strategic capability at a time of continuing tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
China has described the missile launch as part of its regular military training and said it was not directed at any country or target. However, the AFP said such actions should be viewed against the broader regional security environment, where transparency and restraint remain critical to preventing miscalculation.
The military said its position is consistent with the Department of National Defense and the national government’s call for all states to act in accordance with peace, stability, restraint, and international law.
The AFP issued the statement as the Philippines prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of its 2016 Arbitral Victory on July 12. The ruling affirmed the country’s maritime entitlements in the West Philippine Sea and rejected China’s sweeping claims in the South China Sea.
The military said it remains committed to defending Philippine sovereignty, sovereign rights, and maritime interests, particularly in the West Philippine Sea, amid continuing challenges to the rules-based international order.
It also called for greater transparency and restraint, urging all parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions or undermine peace and stability in the region.
