Iloilo City Showcased as Model for Sustainable Urban Development at ASEAN Climate Week

Iloilo City was highlighted as a model for sustainable urban development during ASEAN Climate Week 2026, with officials pointing to its local initiatives as proof that climate action can deliver tangible benefits to communities.

The city was cited for its integrated approach to urban planning, combining climate resilience, environmental protection, and community-focused development—aligned with broader sustainability goals under the ASEAN framework.

During a press briefing, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) underscored Iloilo’s urban greening and river rehabilitation efforts as key examples of effective climate adaptation at the local level.

DENR Undersecretary Jonas Leones pointed to the city’s linear parks along the Iloilo River as a standout initiative.

“The LGU of Iloilo showcased their linear parks along the Iloilo River, which are impressive in terms of the extent of greening done in the urban area,” Leones said.

He noted that the project demonstrates how environmental rehabilitation can be scaled in urban settings to improve living conditions, reduce flood risks, and expand public spaces.

Beyond environmental gains, Leones said the initiatives also support livelihoods in nearby communities.

“The goal is not only greening or reforestation, but also livelihood support. Many of the seedlings distributed are fruit-bearing, which can later contribute to community income,” he said.

Officials said the approach reflects a broader shift toward climate programs that integrate ecological restoration with socio-economic development, particularly in climate-vulnerable urban areas.

At the regional level, Iloilo’s experience aligns with the objectives of ASEAN Climate Week 2026, which highlights practical, community-based solutions alongside policy commitments.

As the Philippines chairs ASEAN in 2026, officials said cities like Iloilo demonstrate how local governments can translate sustainability goals into measurable outcomes—showing that climate action can both protect communities and drive inclusive growth.
