Sen. Risa Hontiveros said she is seriously considering a presidential bid in the 2028 elections following Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo’s decision not to seek any national post.
In an interview in Negros Occidental, Hontiveros said she has long been open to running for president and is now actively weighing the possibility.
“Right now, seryosong pinaghahandaan at kino-consider yung possibility na iyon,” she said, noting that the decision remains under ongoing preparation and consultation.
She stressed that any final decision would depend on broader discussions within her political circle, emphasizing the need for unity among potential opposition candidates.
“Kung ako o kung iba pa sa hanay namin ang lumabas na pinakamalakas, ang posisyon ko ay magkaisa kami para suportahan kung sino man iyon,” Hontiveros said, adding that the priority is to rally behind the strongest candidate.
The senator said preparations for the 2028 elections have been underway since 2022, with regular consultations among reform advocates, opposition figures, and civic groups aimed at building a full electoral slate from the presidential race down to senatorial candidates.
“At first things first, ang tungkulin namin ay ayusin ang sarili naming hanay para kung may ibang grupong lalapit, handa kami at matatag,” she said.
Hontiveros is serving her second and final Senate term, which ends in 2028, the same year as the next presidential elections.
