WESCOM Leadership Shift Bolsters AFP Presence in West Philippine Sea

A leadership transition at the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Western Command (WESCOM) underscored the military’s sustained focus on safeguarding the country’s maritime interests, particularly in the strategically vital West Philippine Sea.

AFP Chief of Staff Romeo Brawner Jr. led the change of command ceremony at the Tactical Operations Wing–West headquarters in Antonio Bautista Air Base, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. The event marked the formal assumption of Vice Admiral Alan Javier as the new commander of the WESCOM.

Javier takes over from Commodore Charles Merric Villanueva, who had been serving as acting commander and will now continue in a key role as deputy commander for external defense operations.

The ceremony featured the traditional handover of command and recognition rites for Villanueva, whose leadership, according to Brawner, helped maintain a steady and credible military presence in the West Philippine Sea.

Brawner highlighted that under Villanueva’s watch, maritime patrols were carried out with discipline, while situational awareness in contested waters improved. He emphasized that operations remained firm yet measured, asserting the country’s position without triggering escalation.

Turning to the incoming commander, Brawner stressed the need for continuity in strategy and leadership, noting that Javier brings both operational expertise and strategic insight to the role. He outlined key priorities, including sustaining military presence, strengthening deterrence, enhancing capabilities, and ensuring effective leadership within the ranks.

The AFP chief also reminded personnel that despite the leadership change, the mission remains unchanged, which is about defending national sovereignty and protecting vital maritime resources.

He emphasized the broader importance of WESCOM’s role, pointing out that its operations directly impact the security of Filipino fishermen, the safety of trade routes, and the country’s future as a maritime nation.

The WESCOM continues to serve as the AFP’s frontline unit in the West Philippine Sea, playing a crucial role in upholding the Philippines’ territorial integrity amid evolving regional challenges.
