‘Mash-Up Queen’ Ate Gay dies at 55

Filipino comedy has lost one of its most distinctive performers with the death of Gil Aducal Morales, better known to audiences as Ate Gay, at the age of 55.

Her family announced that the comedian died on Sunday, November 1, following weeks of serious health complications. She spent her final moments surrounded by loved ones.

“Our beloved Ate Gay has peacefully passed away,” the family said in a statement posted on her official social media account.

They also thanked those who offered prayers, financial assistance and other forms of support throughout her illness. Details of her wake and funeral will be announced separately.

Ate Gay was hospitalized at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Muntinlupa after experiencing difficulty breathing on October 17. Her family said doctors diagnosed her with septic shock and acute respiratory failure caused by pneumonia, prompting her admission to the intensive care unit.

Although she recovered from the initial septic shock, her condition worsened after she suffered a stroke on October 29. The stroke damaged the right side of her brain and left her dependent on life-support equipment.

The comedian had also publicly disclosed in September 2025 that she had been diagnosed with Stage 4 mucoepidermoid carcinoma, a rare form of cancer commonly affecting the salivary glands. She subsequently underwent chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments.

Just weeks before her death, Ate Gay gathered with family and friends for a “living funeral” in Biñan, Laguna. The October 15 event allowed the comedian to hear tributes and receive flowers and messages of gratitude while she was still alive.

Long before becoming a familiar presence on television and social media, Ate Gay built her name in the country’s comedy-bar circuit. Her impersonation of National Artist Nora Aunor and her playful combinations of seemingly unrelated songs eventually earned her the title “Mash-Up Queen.”

Her journey to show business was far from easy. Before finding success as a stand-up comedian, she worked as a janitor and dishwasher and performed with the Singing Cooks and Waiters. She later appeared in television programs, films and major live productions, eventually bringing her comedy-bar act to larger stages.

Through shifting entertainment trends and personal setbacks, Ate Gay remained known for turning familiar songs and everyday struggles into laughter.

She leaves behind a body of work remembered not only for its humor, but also for the quick wit, musical creativity and resilience that made Ate Gay an unmistakable voice in Filipino comedy.
