PNP to coordinate with US, UK authorities in probe of Thomas Markle over alleged child abuse images

The Philippine National Police (PNP), under the leadership of Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., announced it will work closely with law enforcement agencies abroad as authorities look into allegations linking Thomas Markle, father of Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, to the possession of child abuse and exploitation images.

PGEN Nartatez stressed the need for cross-border cooperation in investigating Thomas Markle over suspected child exploitation, particularly cases that may involve digital evidence and individuals with links to different countries.

The action follows the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr., through the guidance of DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to thoroughly investigate allegations of criminal activity in accordance with the law.

“The safety of our children remains a priority. Those who try to engage in child exploitation often extend beyond borders, and as such, it emphasizes the importance of strong coordination with our foreign counterparts,” PGEN Nartatez said.

Secretary Remulla earlier said Markle is currently under investigation over allegations relating to possession of images of sexual abuse on children.

PGEN Nartatez noted that the PNP will coordinate with foreign counterparts to facilitate information sharing and support the investigation, adding that investigators will focus on digital forensics and evidence gathering to determine whether any illegal activity took place.

“We will thoroughly investigate the accusations and we will make the necessary coordination with law enforcement agencies in the United Kingdom and the United States for better information sharing on the matter,” PGEN Nartatez added.

Authorities said the elder Markle possessed images of child abuse reportedly found among his belongings at his former home in Cebu, although he reportedly denied the allegations.

PGEN Nartatez said the PNP maintains a zero-tolerance policy against child exploitation and is committed to protecting minors from abuse, including forms of exploitation facilitated by digital platforms and cross-border networks.

He emphasized that any criminal action would depend on the findings of the investigation.

“The PNP will pursue the appropriate cases if evidence establishes involvement in the online exploitation of minors,” PGEN Nartatez also said.
