Schools to adopt flexible schedules, water conservation measures as DepEd braces for El Niño

The Department of Education (DepEd) is set to issue a memorandum outlining guidelines to help schools prepare for the expected “very strong” El Niño phenomenon.

In an interview with the program Boses, DepEd Undersecretary Malcolm Garma said the suspension of face-to-face classes would continue to depend on the heat index advisories issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Garma said face-to-face classes would be automatically suspended when the heat index reaches 42 degrees Celsius or higher to prevent heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke and dehydration.

School heads are also authorized to recommend class suspensions when heat conditions in their respective schools reach dangerous levels.

Other El Niño mitigation measures being prepared by DepEd include ensuring adequate water supplies, maintaining well-ventilated classrooms, adopting flexible class schedules, and allowing students to wear more comfortable clothing.

In case of class suspensions, the department will implement its learning continuity framework, including alternative learning modalities, to ensure that students can continue their studies at home.

Schools are also being directed to ensure access to drinking water and encouraged to store water during rainy periods in preparation for possible shortages during El Niño.
