‘Breaking Bad’ actor RJ Mitte dies at 34, leaves legacy of disability advocacy

American actor RJ Mitte, best known for portraying Walter White Jr. in the acclaimed television series Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34, leaving behind a legacy that extended beyond acting to his advocacy for disability inclusion in Hollywood.

Mitte died on Monday, October 12, in Brownsville, Texas. While initial reports did not disclose the circumstances of his death, People magazine subsequently reported that his representative confirmed he died by suicide.

The actor rose to international prominence through AMC’s Breaking Bad, where he played the son of Walter White, portrayed by Bryan Cranston. The crime drama, which aired from 2008 to 2013, became one of television’s most critically acclaimed series.

Mitte was still a teenager when he joined the cast. His character, also known as Flynn, became an important part of the show’s family storyline, particularly as Walter White’s involvement in the illegal drug trade gradually destroyed his relationships with those closest to him.

Born Roy Frank Mitte III on August 21, 1992, the actor was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three. His experience with the condition later shaped both his acting career and his efforts to promote authentic representation of people with disabilities.

His portrayal of Walter White Jr., a character who also had cerebral palsy, helped bring visibility to performers with disabilities in mainstream television at a time when such opportunities remained limited.

Beyond Breaking Bad, Mitte continued working in film and television, appearing in projects including Switched at Birth, The Guardians of Justice, and the 2021 sports drama Triumph, in which he portrayed a high school student pursuing his ambition to become a wrestler.

His influence also reached beyond entertainment.

Mitte became involved with organizations supporting individuals with disabilities, including United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s. Through public appearances and advocacy initiatives, he promoted accessibility, equal opportunities, and greater inclusion within the entertainment industry.

He frequently used his platform to challenge misconceptions surrounding disability, emphasizing that physical conditions should not determine a person’s ambitions or professional opportunities.

In the weeks before his death, Mitte remained active in the entertainment industry. He attended a screening of his film Talking to Strangers in Beverly Hills on September 30 and made a public appearance at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in early October.

News of his passing prompted tributes from colleagues and fellow performers, including members of the Breaking Bad cast.

Bryan Cranston, who played his on-screen father, expressed his grief over Mitte’s death, remembering the young actor he watched grow professionally and personally throughout their years working together.

Other cast members, including Aaron Paul and Dean Norris, also paid tribute to their former colleague, recalling their experiences working with him on the award-winning series.

For audiences, Mitte will remain closely associated with Walter White Jr., whose complicated relationship with his father became one of the emotional foundations of Breaking Bad.

Yet his contribution to the industry extended beyond a single television role. Through his performances and advocacy, he helped broaden conversations about disability representation and the importance of providing meaningful opportunities for actors of different abilities.

His death at 34 marks the loss of a performer whose work helped challenge stereotypes and encourage a more inclusive entertainment industry.
