President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated on Wednesday that he has not yet received the legislative proposal seeking to postpone the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
When asked during an ambush interview whether he had received the measure and made a decision on its approval, the President clarified that the document has not yet been transmitted to his office.
“Wala pa. Wala pa sa akin (None yet. I have received it yet),” the President said in an ambush interview where he was asked if he had already received the proposed postponement and decided on it.
The Chief Executive’s statement comes amid widespread speculation that he would sign into law a measure that extends the official tenure of local leaders from four years to five years.
If enacted, the proposed legislation will amend Republic Act No. 12232, which currently establishes a four-year term for local officials and sets the next election date for November 2, 2026.
Under the revised framework, the tenure of barangay and SK officials would be expanded to five years. Consequently, the next local polls would be pushed back to the second Monday of November 2028, establishing a regular five-year election cycle moving forward.
