Prosecution To Zero In On Vp Sara’s Alleged Unexplained Wealth As Trial Enters Next Phase

Public focus on the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte is expected to intensify as the House prosecution panel turns its sights toward Article II of the impeachment complaint, which centers on her alleged amassing of unexplained wealth.

House prosecutor and Manila Representative Joel Chua confirmed that the legal team will target specific key bank accounts reported by financial institutions, using selected records to substantiate the charges rather than overwhelming the court with voluminous documents.

Lead prosecutors for Article II, Representative Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno of Akbayan and Representative Terry Ridon of Bicol Saro, will be at the helm of the presentation of financial evidence before the Senate Impeachment Court.

Deputy Speaker and La Union Representative Paolo Ortega V recalled that during early House committee inquiries, allegations regarding the Vice President’s financial standing drew the most intense public scrutiny and interest.

“Kung babalikan niyo yung mga hearings na yun, yun ang medyo may kilabot atsaka yun yung medyo pinag-usapan. So, kailangan maintindihan din ng taong bayan na parang ito yung nail nung Committee on Justice, yung bilyon-bilyong na pera na dumahan. So, siguro ito yung mas aabangan,” Ortega noted, emphasizing that the financial trail remains the core issue expected to captivate observers.

Ortega added that he personally views this segment of the trial as the most critical stage of the proceedings, “para sa akin, parang ito yung pinakaabangan ko na artikulo na i-pepresenta dito sa impeachment trial.”

To streamline the proceedings and avoid unnecessary delays, the prosecution plans a targeted presentation strategy. Ortega noted that during the presentation of Article I regarding confidential funds, prosecutors introduced selected acknowledgment receipts to demonstrate alleged irregularities rather than submitting thousands of individual documents.

The prosecution intends to adopt the same streamlined approach for Article II by presenting curated, high-impact bank records and financial transactions to demonstrate the alleged wealth disparity.
