James Reid Finds Freedom in the Loose, Sunlit Sound of ‘Sunny Side’

There is an ease to James Reid’s new single “Sunny Side” that feels almost deceptive. Beneath its filtered guitars, relaxed drums and casually delivered rap is an artist making a more deliberate statement: he no longer seems interested in letting other people define where he belongs.

Released August 27 via Sony Music Entertainment, “Sunny Side” pairs Reid with producer and artist Luke April for a track that moves away from the polished edges of Reid’s familiar alt-pop sound. Instead, it leans into looseness—rhythms that drift slightly off-center, textures that change without warning and an arrangement that feels discovered rather than meticulously engineered.

That quality can be traced directly to the way the song was made.

“Sunny Side” emerged during a week-long session in the backyard of an Airbnb, where April assembled a makeshift outdoor studio and collaborators moved freely through the space. There was no rigid agenda dictating what each session had to produce. Reid and the group instead allowed ideas to develop as they came, leaving room for instinct, mistakes and unexpected turns.

April describes that approach in deliberately uncomplicated terms.

“I turn off my smarty-pants brain and just let the ‘source’ do its thing,” he says. “No overthinking, keep mistakes, be patient for happy accidents.”

His reference points for the song included Dominic Fike’s “Sunburn” and Jean Dawson’s “Bruiseboy,” but “Sunny Side” does not feel overly indebted to either. Its appeal comes from the sense that the musicians were willing to follow the track wherever it wanted to go. Sections shift in tone and texture without calling attention to themselves, giving the song the spontaneity of something still being figured out in real time.

That relaxed production also gives Reid space to articulate what “Sunny Side” means to him personally.

“Yes, it’s about freedom, but it’s also about feeling untouchable,” Reid says. “Who I am is not defined by what people think; it’s who I choose to be despite what people think.”

The distinction matters. “Sunny Side” is not a song about pretending outside judgment does not exist. It is about refusing to surrender authority to it.

That idea also points toward Reid’s upcoming album, honey, i’m home, due September 10. If “Sunny Side” is any indication, the record is less concerned with rebellion for its own sake than with what comes after it: the quieter confidence of someone who no longer feels compelled to explain himself.

“Home is where I’m most myself,” Reid says.

It is an apt description of the direction his music appears to be taking. For an artist whose career has unfolded across music, acting and an intensely public life, the idea of “home” becomes more than a physical place. It suggests a state in which identity no longer has to be negotiated with an audience.

That may be the most compelling thing about “Sunny Side.” It does not sound like Reid chasing a defining hit, proving a reinvention or announcing a dramatic break from the past.

It simply sounds like he has become comfortable enough to stop trying so hard to be understood.
