Palace: Marcos Has No Stand Yet on Making Loose Firearms Possession Non-Bailable

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has yet to take a definitive stance on a proposal to classify the possession of loose firearms as a non-bailable offense, as he needs time to thoroughly review proposed legislation and stiffer penalties.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro clarified during a media briefing on Wednesday that while the Chief Executive remains open to measures aimed at curbing gun-related violence and enhancing public safety, any policy change must go through the legislative process first.

“Sa ngayon po ay wala po tayong maibibigay na anumang stance ng Pangulo patungkol po diyan dahil kung ito po ay gagawing batas magsisimula ito mula sa Kongreso,” Castro stated.

The proposal originates from Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, who advocated for removing bail and imposing a 20-year prison sentence for illegal possession of loose firearms following recent fatal shooting incidents inside school premises involving minors.

Castro acknowledged that Secretary Remulla’s suggestion is a positive step toward better protecting the country and its citizens. She noted that while President Marcos is unlikely to block initiatives designed in the public’s best interest, he will await the final version of the bills originating from Congress before formalizing his position.

In addition to legal reforms, Castro pointed out that recent campus shooting incidents might have been prevented had gun owners exercised greater caution and responsibility in securing their firearms, emphasizing that proper gun handling is essential to avoiding tragic acts of negligence.
