AFP: China Coast Guard, Research Vessels Increase in WPS in First Half of 2026

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reported a shift in Chinese activity in the West Philippine Sea during the first half of 2026. While the overall presence of Chinese vessels declined compared to the same period in 2025, deployments of China Coast Guard (CCG) ships and Chinese research and survey vessels (RSVs) both increased.

According to the Philippine Navy’s semestral monitoring report, People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLAN) vessels dropped from 100 to 78, and China Maritime Militia Vessels (CMMVs) decreased from 999 to 850. In contrast, the number of monitored CCG vessels rose from 68 to 77, while RSVs increased from 33 to 44. The military stated that this shift toward fewer naval and militia ships alongside an expanded coast guard presence points to a heavier emphasis on law enforcement functions in the region.

Furthermore, the AFP recorded 16 research and survey vessels exhibiting unusual track patterns within Philippine maritime zones and other areas of interest.

“These patterns are likely linked to marine scientific research or hydrographic surveys and indicate a focus on areas near the Kalayaan Island Group, the eastern seaboard of Luzon up to the Balintang and Bashi channels,” the AFP said.

The military emphasized that it continues to regularly monitor activities in the West Philippine Sea to maintain maritime domain awareness and uphold national sovereignty, sovereign rights, and maritime interests.

“The Armed Forces remains committed to conducting lawful maritime and air operations, strengthening coordination with partner agencies and maintaining a credible defense posture,” it said.

“We will continue to closely monitor developments and provide timely and accurate information in support of national security and regional stability and will perform our mandate with professionalism, vigilance, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and maritime interests,” the AFP added.
