BINI Wins Over Osaka Crowd as They Sing in Japanese at Summer Sonic 2026

Most acts performing at a foreign festival bring their existing setlist and hope for the best. BINI brought Japanese lyrics.

On August 14, the eight-member Filipino girl group took the Mountain Stage at Expo ’70 Commemorative Park in Osaka for their Summer Sonic 2026 debut, and midway through the set, slipped Japanese-language verses into two of their biggest songs: “Born to Win” and “Salamin, Salamin.” The Osaka crowd, many of whom were encountering BINI for the first time, responded immediately.

May be an image of skates and dancing

The group’s 40-minute set opened with “Cherry on Top” and ran through “Zero Pressure,” “Out of My Head,” “Step Back,” “Blush,” and “Sugar Rush” before closing with “Pantropiko,” their 2023 hit that has since become one of the most recognizable P-pop songs outside the Philippines. The Japanese-language versions of “Born to Win” and “Salamin, Salamin” landed in the middle of that run, and the reaction from the crowd was the clearest sign that the decision paid off.

BINI’s slot ran from 2:40 to 3:20 PM JST. Summer Sonic, now in its 25th year, is not a regional showcase. The festival has hosted Radiohead, Beyoncé, and Billie Eilish across its history. A slot on its stages is earned, not assigned. What you do with it is a separate question, and BINI’s answer in Osaka was to treat the audience like people worth preparing for rather than a crowd to perform at.

The Japanese lyrics did not overhaul either song. “Salamin, Salamin” and “Born to Win” remained Filipino pop songs. What changed was a signal to the room: we know where we are and we know who you are.

In April, the group became the first all-Filipino act to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, taking the Mojave Stage across both festival weekends. Both the Philippine Senate and the House of Representatives formally adopted resolutions recognizing the performance, which tells you something about what it meant at home. On the same day as their Coachella debut, Billboard named BINI the Global Force honoree at the 2026 Billboard Women in Music Awards, making them the first Filipino group to receive that recognition.

The award was presented at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles by Cara Delevingne, who said BINI “debuted during the pandemic at a time when connection had to travel through Wi-Fi, through livestreams, comments, and choreography learned at home.”

Colet spoke first during the acceptance speech. “Standing here tonight is something we, BINI, could only dream about,” she said. “We are deeply honored to be given a chance to represent Filipino music and artists back home.” Jhoanna added: “We hope that we inspire young girls watching this and they realize that their dreams are valid, no matter where they come from.”

Summer Sonic came in the middle of an already punishing schedule. The Signals World Tour opened in Manila and Cebu before moving to North America with dates in Honolulu, Los Angeles, Rohnert Park, Las Vegas, and San Diego. The group flew to Japan after San Diego and heads back across the Pacific to Vancouver on August 18, two days after their second Summer Sonic set in Tokyo today, August 16. That Tokyo performance runs from 3:30 to 4:10 PM JST at ZOZO Marine Stadium and Makuhari Messe, with a livestream on WOWOW On Demand.

BINI shared the Summer Sonic 2026 bill with SB19, who performed on Osaka’s Massive Stage, and Filipino-Japanese singer-songwriter Ena Mori, who was part of the Tokyo lineup — the largest Filipino presence in the festival’s 25-year history across any single edition.

SB19’s inclusion matters as context. Two of P-pop’s biggest acts on two different stages of the same festival, on the same day, is not a coincidence or a favor. It is the result of years of groundwork that has made Filipino acts a credible draw for international festival bookers.

BINI also heads into the second half of 2026 with four Awit Award nominations: “Shagidi” for Best Pop Recording and Best Performance by a Group, “Katabi” for Best R&B Recording, and “Blink Twice (Dos Veces Remix)” featuring Agnez Mo for Best Global Collaboration Recording.

The nominations, the tour, the Billboard award, Coachella — all of it forms a year that would have sounded like a stretch goal two years ago. But the Osaka detail that will stick is simpler than any of those headlines.
