Higher Spot Market Power Prices May Affect July Electricity Bills

  • May Flores
  • Nation
  • July 9, 2026

Electricity purchased from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market became more expensive in June 2026 compared with May, which may affect July power bills in areas where distribution utilities and electric cooperatives relied on spot market supply.

Based on reported market figures, spot market prices increased by around ₱0.93 per kilowatt-hour in Luzon, ₱4.25 per kilowatt-hour in the Visayas, and ₱3.48 per kilowatt-hour in Mindanao.

The impact on consumers will vary depending on how much electricity their distribution utility or electric cooperative bought from the spot market during the billing period.

This means not all households will see the same increase in their electricity bills. Areas with higher exposure to spot market purchases may feel a bigger impact, while those with more supply covered by long-term contracts may see a smaller effect.

The Wholesale Electricity Spot Market is where power suppliers and buyers trade electricity based on supply and demand conditions. Prices can rise when demand is high, supply is tight, power plants are on outage, or transmission constraints limit the movement of cheaper electricity across grids.

Consumers are advised to check the generation charge and other components of their July electricity bills to better understand how spot market movements affected their final charges.
