The Philippine Navy contingent participating in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2026 visited a Peruvian Navy submarine in Hawaii as part of efforts to strengthen ties with partner navies.

Naval Task Group 84, led by Captain Ryan L. Bakabak PN(GSC), visited the BAP Chipana (SS-34), a Type 209 submarine of the Peruvian Navy, on July 1, 2026, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

The Philippine contingent was welcomed by the submarine’s officers and crew, led by commanding officer Commander Minano Marcial.

During the visit, the Navy team toured key areas of the submarine, including the torpedo compartment, combat operations center, control room, berthing spaces, and engine room.

The Philippine Navy said the activity gave its personnel a closer look at the submarine’s capabilities, operations, and maintenance practices.

The visit also allowed the Philippine and Peruvian navies to exchange professional insights, operational experiences, and best practices.

The Navy said the engagement reflects its continuing push to build stronger cooperation and improve interoperability with partner nations in support of regional peace and maritime stability.
