Marikina Sustains Drainage Declogging To Reduce Flood Risk

  • Mervin Reyes

  • July 1, 2026

The Marikina City government is continuing its declogging operations across several areas as part of efforts to keep drainage systems clear and reduce flood risks during heavy rains.

The City Engineering Department has been clearing drainage lines of debris, silt, and other obstructions that could block the flow of water and worsen flooding during the rainy season.

City officials said the regular maintenance work is being carried out under the directive of Mayor Maan Teodoro, who ordered the sustained upkeep of flood control and drainage infrastructure.

The local government said the operations are meant to improve the capacity of drainage systems, strengthen flood preparedness, and protect communities in flood-prone areas.

Marikina, which has long faced flooding risks due to its location near the Marikina River and low-lying communities, has made drainage maintenance a key part of its disaster prevention and mitigation efforts.

Officials said continuous declogging is necessary to ensure that flood control measures remain effective, especially during periods of intense rainfall.
