QC To Investigate INC Rally Held Without Permit As Authorities Prioritize EDSA Traffic

The Quezon City government will investigate the emergency rally being held by the Iglesia ni Cristo near the People Power Monument after officials said the gathering had no permit.

Elmo San Diego, chief of the Quezon City government’s Department of Public Order and Safety, said the probe would be conducted in coordination with the police, but only after authorities address the traffic situation along EDSA.

“Actually, we are going to investigate that in coordination with the police,” San Diego said in a radio interview.

“(It will be conducted) after the fact. We cannot address the issue right now because we want to address the traffic issue,” he added.

San Diego said some individuals may be held accountable, saying, “because that is illegal assembly.”

He said the northbound lane of EDSA near the People Power Monument is already passable.

Authorities have also asked the rally organizers to move along the White Plains area, in the vicinity of the monument, and clear EDSA.

San Diego said officials have yet to receive information from the INC on how long its members plan to hold the rally.

“What’s becoming an issue now is that there is no timeline. We don’t know when it will end. And they have no announcement until they announce when they are going to be there,” San Diego said.

Despite the lack of a permit, San Diego said authorities are not going to disperse the crowd to avoid injuries.
