PH Household Population Rises to 112.33 Million in 2024 as Family Sizes Shrink

THE Philippines’ household population reached 112.33 million in 2024, marking steady growth alongside a continued decline in average household size, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The figure is 3.4-percent higher than the 108.67 million recorded in 2020, adding about 3.66 million individuals over the four-year period. It also reflects an 11.7-percent increase from the 100.57 million recorded in 2015.

PSA data showed that 99.6 percent of the population lived in private households, while the remaining 0.4 percent were classified as institutional residents, including those in hospitals, orphanages, military camps, and Filipinos stationed in embassies, consulates, and foreign missions.

Despite population growth, the average household size continued to shrink, falling to 3.8 persons in 2024 from 4.1 persons in 2020. The trend has been ongoing since 2010, indicating a gradual shift toward smaller family units.

The total number of households rose to 29.67 million in 2024, up by 12.4 percent or 3.27 million from 26.39 million in 2020. This also represents a 29.1-percent increase compared with the 22.98 million households recorded in 2015.

Regionally, CALABARZON (Region IV-A) recorded the highest number of households at 4.82 million, followed by the National Capital Region with 3.74 million, and Central Luzon with 3.52 million. Together, the three regions accounted for 40.7 percent of all households nationwide.

The Cordillera Administrative Region posted the lowest number of households at 473,422.

In terms of household size, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) recorded the highest average at 4.9 persons per household. It was followed by Zamboanga Peninsula at 4.2, Bicol Region at 4.1, Caraga and Eastern Visayas at 4.0 each, and Northern Mindanao, Western Visayas, and MIMAROPA at 3.9.

CALABARZON and the Davao Region recorded the smallest average household size at 3.5 persons each, reflecting the broader national trend toward smaller households.
