AirAsia Philippines Retires Older Aircraft, Prepares for A220 Fleet Expansion

AirAsia Philippines is gradually phasing out older aircraft as part of a broader fleet modernization program aimed at improving efficiency and preparing for new-generation aircraft deliveries.

The airline said it is optimizing its operations and fleet deployment strategy to support long-term growth while maintaining operational performance across its network.

The shift comes ahead of the planned induction of the Airbus A220, which AirAsia expects to receive by the end of next year. The aircraft will be deployed in the Philippine market as part of its expansion strategy.

“We are going to get the A220s by the end of next year, and these aircraft will also be deployed in the Philippines,” said Bo Lingam, Group chief executive of AirAsia Aviation Group.

He added that route planning and deployment decisions are currently under review.

“We are currently reviewing our network strategy, and over the next two to three months, we will determine the routes, deployment plans, and opportunities that will support our long-term growth in the Philippine market,” he said.

AirAsia Group said the modernization effort is part of a wider operational restructuring that includes restoring flight frequencies across its regional network, with full capacity recovery targeted by August 2026.

The group has also expanded its route portfolio, including new services to destinations such as Busan, Bahrain, London, and Batam, alongside additional domestic routes across its Southeast Asian network.

Airline officials said future expansion will focus on routes that deliver sustainable performance, balancing cost efficiency with long-term profitability.

Operational improvements have also been driven by fleet renewal, including the gradual retirement of older aircraft and the introduction of more fuel-efficient models such as the Airbus A321LR, which the company says reduces fuel burn per seat by up to 20 percent.

The incoming Airbus A220 fleet is expected to further enhance efficiency and support lower operating costs, reinforcing the airline’s push for sustained competitiveness in a highly cost-sensitive market.

AirAsia said it continues to target accessible air travel while working with industry partners to strengthen aviation operations across the region.
