A nearly P95,000 electricity bill has gone viral online after talent manager and concert producer Cacai Mitra, sister of singer Regine Velasquez, posted her latest billing statement on social media, prompting public questions about high power consumption and residential electricity costs.
In a Facebook post dated June 16, 2026, Cacai shared a Meralco bill totaling P94,355.21 for the period May 8 to June 7. The statement showed total consumption of 5,920 kilowatt-hours with an average rate of P15.94 per kWh.
Cacai said she was surprised by the amount, noting that she had been careful with electricity use at home. She also stressed that the property is a residence and not a commercial establishment.
The post quickly gained traction online as users compared the figure to typical household electricity bills and questioned possible reasons for the spike.
The distribution utility Meralco responded by saying it had already reached out to the customer to explain the billing details and consumption pattern.
Meralco classified the account as a high-load service, a category used for customers with significantly higher electricity demand than standard residential users. This classification often applies to larger homes or households with heavy appliance use and continuous energy consumption.
The company said the recorded usage did not show an unusual spike, adding that the consumption pattern remained consistent with previous billing cycles and historical data, including comparisons with the same period last year.
It also said the increase aligns with normal seasonal variation in electricity use and confirmed that the account’s historical chart supports steady consumption levels over time.
While the figure drew attention online, utilities note that total electricity bills are influenced not only by consumption but also by layered charges such as generation, transmission, distribution, and taxes, which can significantly raise final costs for high-usage accounts.
Meralco added that it is willing to conduct a technical inspection of the property to further clarify the billing breakdown and address any remaining customer concerns.
The viral post continues to circulate across social platforms, fueling broader discussion on rising electricity costs, household energy demand, and how high-consumption residential accounts are classified and billed.
