DOE Discusses Clean Energy and Energy Storage at ACEF 2026

The Department of Energy (DOE) advanced discussions on the Philippines’ clean energy transition through a series of meetings held during the Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF) 2026 on June 10.

Led by Undersecretary Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, the DOE engaged with international partners and energy organizations to support ongoing policy development and infrastructure planning for the country’s shift toward low-carbon energy systems.

One of the key discussions was with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP), which focused on sustaining momentum from the Accelerating Clean Energy Scenarios (ACES) forum. The meeting covered technical support for coal transition policy development, the Coal Transition Coalition, expansion of rooftop solar programs, and long-term coordination between transmission and generation planning.

The DOE also held talks with the Future Energy Storage and System Integration Alliance (FESSIA), focusing on integrating energy storage technologies into the national grid. Discussions included standalone battery storage applications and Integrated Renewable Energy Storage Systems (IRESS), as well as the role of storage in supporting pumped-storage hydro projects.

FESSIA presented findings from its latest report on battery energy storage use cases, which the DOE said will help inform future planning and deployment strategies.

In a parallel development, the DOE and the Energy Regulatory Commission are preparing a joint workshop to establish clearer policy direction for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the Philippines.

The agency said these engagements form part of broader efforts to improve grid reliability, strengthen energy security, and accelerate the country’s transition toward a more sustainable and diversified energy mix.
