Witnesses, Players Asked for Full Cooperation as PNP Probes Ateneo Athletes’ Deaths

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is calling for full cooperation from all individuals summoned in connection with the drowning of two student-athletes in Aurora province, emphasizing transparency and adherence to legal procedures.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stressed that witness accounts are crucial to understanding the events that led to the deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, members of the Ateneo de Manila University Men’s Basketball Team.

“We owe the parents and the public a clear explanation of what really happened amid all the speculation circulating on social media,” he said.

The PNP, through the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), confirmed that subpoenas have been issued to the basketball players, coaches, and other involved parties as part of the fact-finding investigation. Authorities are also examining potential violations of the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 (RA 11053) in connection with the team-building activity held at a beach resort.

Initial reports from the Aurora Police Provincial Office indicate no signs of foul play. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to corroborate all witness statements and complete the timeline of events.

Nartatez assured the public that the probe will be impartial, independent, and conducted strictly in accordance with due process. “I assure everyone that due process will be strictly observed in the course of the investigation,” he said, underscoring the PNP’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
