The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) paid tribute to Private First Class John Rey Brasil of the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, following his death in an encounter with communist rebels in Negros Occidental.
Brasil was killed on June 1, 2026, during a clash with members of the North Negros Front in Barangay Tamlang, Escalante City.
NTF-ELCAC said Brasil “made the ultimate sacrifice” in the line of duty, describing him as a soldier who embodied courage, selflessness and commitment to service.
“In confronting the remnants of the North Negros Front, he exemplified the highest ideals of military service: selflessness, bravery and unwavering commitment to duty,” the task force said.
The agency extended its condolences to Brasil’s family, loved ones, friends and fellow soldiers, saying no words could fully ease the pain of losing a soldier in service to the country.
NTF-ELCAC said Brasil stood as a defender of communities threatened by violence and instability, adding that his sacrifice was made in pursuit of lasting peace in Negros Occidental.
The task force also recognized Brasil’s work beyond the battlefield, noting his involvement with the Youth for Peace Movement, Northern Negros Chapter, where he encouraged young Filipinos to take part in community service, responsible citizenship and nation-building.
“Though his life was cut short, his legacy endures in the communities he helped protect, in the youth he inspired and in the nation he faithfully served,” NTF-ELCAC said.
The task force also expressed gratitude to Brasil’s family, saying the sacrifice they shared in the service of the nation “can never be fully repaid.”
“We salute you, PFC John Rey Brasil. Your courage in battle, your commitment to peace and your devotion to the Filipino people will never be forgotten,” it said.
