Tô Lâm-Cayetano Senate Meeting Cancelled

The scheduled meeting between Vietnamese President Tô Lâm and Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday, June 1, was cancelled, according to the Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau.

The PRIB said it received notice from the Senate’s Office of International Relations and Protocol that the meeting between the two leaders would no longer push through.

No reason was immediately given for the cancellation.

Tô Lâm arrived in the Philippines on Sunday for a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening cooperation between Manila and Hanoi. The visit comes a month before the Philippines and Vietnam mark the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

The Vietnamese leader was accompanied by his wife, Madame Ngô Phương Ly. They were welcomed by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. upon their arrival at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City at around 12:40 p.m.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is expected to formally welcome Tô Lâm and his delegation at Malacañang later Monday.

The state visit is seen as part of continuing efforts to deepen bilateral ties between the two Southeast Asian neighbors, particularly in areas of political, economic, agricultural, and regional cooperation.
