PH Pushes Inclusive Multilateralism in UN Security Council Bid

The country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations underscored the Philippines’ commitment to international peace, security, and inclusive diplomacy during the 8th United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Election Debate for Asia-Pacific Group candidates held on May 20 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The debate, organized by the World Federation of United Nations Associations, featured the Philippines and Kyrgyzstan, which are vying for the lone Asia-Pacific Group seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.

During the forum, Ambassador Enrique Manalo highlighted the Philippines’ longstanding contributions as a founding member of the United Nations and emphasized the country’s readiness to serve as a “reliable partner, innovative pathfinder, and committed peacemaker” amid evolving global security challenges.

He said the Philippines’ candidacy is anchored on the belief that multilateralism works best when it is inclusive, principled, and driven by cooperation among nations.

Manalo also outlined the country’s priorities should it win a seat on the Security Council, including upholding the UN Charter and international law, strengthening peacekeeping and peacebuilding initiatives, advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda, addressing the link between climate action and security, and promoting a more transparent and accountable Security Council.

The Philippine envoy stressed that the country brings both experience and a practical approach to the Council, citing its long history of contributions to peace and security, development, and human rights efforts within the UN system.

The debate also included an interactive exchange with member states and civil society representatives on issues such as sustainable peace, respect for international law, and the inclusion of women-led organizations in mediation and peace processes.

The UN General Assembly is scheduled to elect five non-permanent members of the Security Council on June 3, 2026. The Philippines and Kyrgyzstan are competing for the single seat allocated to the Asia-Pacific Group.
