A police-led community assistance initiative in Abulug, Cagayan brought food aid and a solar-powered lamp to an elderly couple in Barangay Sta. Rosa who have been struggling to meet their daily needs due to illness.
The Abulug Municipal Police Station extended the assistance on May 28, 2026, as part of its continuing community outreach efforts.
Authorities said the couple could no longer earn a living because of their medical condition, making it more difficult for them to provide for their basic needs.
The assistance was made possible through the initiative of a member of the Municipal Advisory Group, with support from other members who continue to back programs focused on compassion and direct community response.
Aside from food assistance, the couple also received a solar-powered lamp under “Project Pailaw,” giving them a reliable source of light at night and a symbol of hope amid their hardships.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the initiative reflects stronger cooperation between the police and the community under its focused agenda, particularly through Enhanced Managing Police Operations and Active Community Support.
In a statement, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said such efforts show that police service goes beyond law enforcement.
“Ang inisyatibang ito ay patunay ng aming patuloy na tungkulin na maglingkod nang may malasakit lampas sa pagpapatupad ng batas,” he said.
“Our duty goes beyond protection; it is also about compassion and care for those in need. At magpapatuloy kami sa aming tungkulin na maglingkod nang may malasakit, lampas sa pagpapatupad ng batas,” he added.
The PNP said it will continue to strengthen community-based programs anchored on its campaign for a “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong mabilis, tapat, at nararamdaman.”
