76% of Filipinos Back Gov’t Defense of PH Territory, West Philippine Sea Rights

A large majority of Filipinos support the government’s efforts to defend the country’s territory and sovereign rights, including the West Philippine Sea (WPS), according to a recent OCTA Research survey.

The survey, conducted from March 19 to 25 and released Monday, showed that 76 percent, or three in every four Filipinos, expressed support for the government’s actions to protect Philippine territory and sovereignty.

Only seven percent of respondents said they disagreed with or were unwilling to support the government’s defense efforts.

The nationwide poll covered 1,200 adult respondents and had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

OCTA’s findings also showed broad support across different areas and economic groups. Across geographic locations, support ranged from 68 percent to 83 percent, while backing across socio-economic classes stood between 71 percent and 76 percent.

The results come as the Philippines continues to assert its rights in the West Philippine Sea, where tensions have persisted over maritime claims, patrols and access to fishing grounds.

The survey indicates that public support remains strong for measures aimed at safeguarding national territory and sovereign rights, particularly in waters that are vital to the country’s security, livelihood and regional interests.
