Ten people, including children, were killed after a rain-induced landslide buried a house occupied by two families in Malapatan, Sarangani, a civil defense official said Friday.
Office of Civil Defense-Soccsksargen Director Rodrigo Sosmeña said the landslide was triggered by heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon, which was enhanced by Typhoon Inday.
“This is an effect of Typhoon Inday; it enhanced the southwest monsoon that caused heavy rainfall (in Sarangani),” Sosmeña said.
“It caused the saturation of soil, resulting to the landslide. Unfortunately, 10 individuals died, buried,” he added.
Sosmeña said children were among the fatalities, although authorities could not immediately provide the exact number.
He said the landslide buried a house occupied by two families. One of the victims was brought to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Sosmeña said he received the report Friday morning, but authorities had yet to confirm the exact time the landslide occurred.
Flooding was also reported in Sultan Kudarat, although no casualties were recorded there, he said.
Earlier Friday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported a separate fatality linked to Inday and the enhanced southwest monsoon in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon.
The NDRRMC said the 50-year-old male victim was crossing a spillway in Barangay Managok when he was swept away by a strong current. His body was later recovered.
