PNP Defends Response to Anti-Pax Silica Demonstration in Taguig, Cites ‘Maximum Tolerance’

The Philippine National Police (PNP) defended its handling of an anti-Pax Silica protest that disrupted the Luzon Economic Corridor Investment Forum in Taguig City on September 10, emphasizing that officers exercised restraint during the clash.

PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said that operational actions focused on containing the unrest and safeguarding attendees at the event.

“The PNP exercised maximum tolerance during the incident. Our officers acted to maintain order and protect the safety of all participants at the forum,” he explained.

The demonstration turned chaotic when activist groups staged a sudden rally at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Bonifacio Global City. Authorities arrested five individuals after law enforcement and hotel security moved to restrain protesters who briefly managed to force their way inside the venue.

According to the Southern Police District (SPD), which holds territorial jurisdiction over BGC, the confrontation left 43 police officers and five activists injured.

“We regret that injuries were sustained, but we will ensure that our response is reviewed and that proper procedures were followed,” PGEN Nartatez said.

He noted that the SPD has been directed to provide comprehensive medical care for all injured officers, with particular attention to potential head trauma from the scuffle.

While acknowledging the public’s right to voice grievances, the PNP chief insisted that demonstrations must adhere to legal standards.

“The right to protest is respected, but it must be conducted peacefully and within the bounds of the law. We urge cause-oriented groups to raise their concerns through lawful means and avoid actions that endanger public safety,” PGEN Nartatez emphasized.

The rally targeted the proposed US-backed Pax Silica Industrial Hub. While advocates highlight the initiative’s potential to boost economic growth and advance global artificial intelligence infrastructure, opposing groups have raised strong objections.
