PCG, PNP Bust P100-M Illegal Cigarette Operations in Cebu, Davao Oriental

Authorities seized more than P100 million worth of illicit cigarettes in separate anti-smuggling operations in Cebu and Davao Oriental, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

In Cebu, PCG operatives confiscated approximately P95 million worth of illegal cigarettes during an interdiction operation at Gothong Wharf, Pier 7 in Mandaue City.

The operation was launched following intelligence reports that contraband cigarettes would be transported through the pier.

“At around 3:20 a.m., operatives monitored the arrival of the two vehicles carrying the alleged illicit cigarettes,” the PCG said in a statement.

Authorities said the drivers abandoned the shipment after noticing the presence of law enforcement personnel.

“Upon noticing the operation, the drivers detached the two container vans from their prime movers and fled the area, leaving the shipment unattended,” the PCG added.

Inside the container vans, authorities discovered 1,900 master cases of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of P95 million.

PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said the Coast Guard remains committed to supporting government efforts against smuggling and illegal trade.

“We remain committed to supporting inter-agency efforts against smuggling and other unlawful activities that undermine economic security and lawful trade,” Cayabyab said.

Meanwhile, in Davao Oriental, police intercepted two vehicles carrying an estimated P6 million worth of illicit cigarettes in Baganga town during a separate operation conducted the same morning.

The PNP said the drivers were arrested and placed under the custody of the Baganga Municipal Police Station for proper legal disposition.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended the operating units for what he described as a coordinated and disciplined response.

“We will continue to intensify operations against illegal activities that disrupt orderly trade and affect the security of our communities,” Nartatez said.

“What is important here is that the operation was properly conducted, with respect for the rights of everyone, and with proper coordination among our units,” he added.
