NBI Reopens Probe Into 18 Ex-Marines, Defensor Over Alleged P5M Bribe

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has reopened its investigation into the case involving 18 individuals claiming to be former Marines after a new witness alleged that former congressman Mike Defensor offered money in exchange for their testimony on the controversial flood control projects.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag said the witness gave formal statements to the bureau on April 28 and May 6.

According to Matibag, the witness allegedly has a personal connection to one of the children of the supposed former Marines and claimed knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the group.

The witness reportedly named Defensor as the person who allegedly offered ₱5 million to the Marines to come forward, testify and hold a press conference in connection with the alleged flood control project anomalies involving politicians.

Matibag said the NBI has ordered a deeper investigation to verify the allegation and determine whether other members of the group were also approached or offered money.

The bureau issued subpoenas on June 2 to Defensor and to the specific Marine who was allegedly offered the payment.

The NBI said the renewed investigation aims to establish the truth behind the alleged bribery attempt and determine the possible liability of those involved.
