NBI Cracks Down on Cyber Extortion, Arrests Two in Manila Operation

  • June 22, 2026

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)–Homicide Division arrested two individuals during an entrapment operation in Ermita, Manila, on June 16, 2026, for alleged violations of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, the Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009, as well as Grave Threats and Unjust Vexation.

The operation stemmed from a complaint involving the unauthorized access of confidential files stored on a company-issued laptop. According to the investigation, the suspects allegedly obtained and disseminated the victim’s personal information, intimate photographs, and videos without consent, then used the materials to threaten and extort money from the complainant.

Authorities said the suspects demanded P300,000 in exchange for deleting the files and refraining from further sharing the sensitive content. Portions of the victim’s personal information and intimate images had reportedly already been distributed through electronic messaging platforms.

Acting on the complaint, NBI operatives conducted an entrapment operation at a commercial establishment in Ermita, where the suspects were arrested immediately after receiving the agreed amount from the complainant. Recovered during the operation were the marked money amounting to P300,000, mobile phones and electronic devices used in communicating with the victim, and electronic messages containing alleged threats and monetary demands.

The NBI reaffirmed its commitment to combating cyber-enabled crimes, online extortion, and the unlawful dissemination of intimate images and personal information, while encouraging victims of similar offenses to immediately seek assistance from law enforcement authorities.
