Metro Manila Police on Full Alert for Independence Day Commemoration

Police units in Metro Manila have been placed on full alert for the country’s 128th Independence Day celebration on Friday, with authorities preparing for official events and possible protest actions in key areas.

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said 8,011 police personnel will be deployed across the capital region, particularly near venues of Independence Day programs and areas where demonstrations are expected.

Security coverage will include Malacañang in Manila, the Senate building in Pasay City, Rizal Park, the Bonifacio Monument, and the House of Representatives.

NCRPO spokesperson Police Major Hazel Asilo said authorities have not confirmed any specific threat but are monitoring reports of planned protests by some groups.

“We have no confirmed information regarding this threat,” Asilo said, adding that police are verifying reports that some groups have applied for rally permits before local government units.

The NCRPO raised its alert status from heightened alert to full alert on Thursday afternoon as part of security preparations for the national commemoration.

Earlier reports indicated that supporters of Vice President Sara Duterte may hold protest actions, including an alleged plan to storm Malacañang. There were also concerns raised over possible security threats at the Senate.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said security measures are already in place nationwide to ensure peace and order during Independence Day activities.

He said there is currently no validated threat, but police commanders have been directed to make real-time security adjustments based on intelligence reports, threat assessments, and developments on the ground.

“This is an annual activity that we prepare for every year. We trust our commanders and personnel for real-time security adjustments based on threat assessments, intelligence gathering and situation on the ground,” Nartatez said.

Around 12,000 police personnel and force multipliers will be deployed in Metro Manila, with emphasis on major public venues and government centers.

“We are ready. We are continuously monitoring the situation, and we assure the Filipino people of the PNP’s presence and readiness as the country celebrates its Independence Day,” Nartatez said.
