The Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) are accelerating efforts to restore affected transmission lines and stabilize the Luzon grid following rotational brownouts that hit several parts of Luzon last week.
The DOE traced the outages to the tripping of the 500-kilovolt Tayabas-Ilijan and Dasmariñas-Ilijan transmission lines, which disrupted the connection of major power plants to the Luzon grid.
Malacañang said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered concerned agencies to immediately address the disruptions and prevent prolonged outages affecting consumers.
The DOE said the NGCP had been instructed to expedite the restoration of the affected transmission facilities and submit full technical and incident reports to ensure accountability and the safe return of power capacity to the grid.
Energy officials are also coordinating with generation companies to safely synchronize affected power supply capacities back into the system.
The transmission line disruptions reportedly disconnected around 2,462.1 megawatts of natural gas-fired generation capacity from the Luzon grid, triggering supply interruptions in several provinces.
To address the situation, the DOE said it has mobilized the Grid Reliability Task Force together with the Energy Regulatory Commission, Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines, National Transmission Corporation, and Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the transmission line trippings that led to the recent brownouts.
