Globe Telecom Inc. announced Friday that it has converted over 1,000 cell sites to renewable energy as of August 2026 through the government’s Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), advancing its strategy to decrease network carbon emissions while improving energy efficiency and sustainability.
After joining the framework in 2025, Globe became the first telecommunications provider in the Philippines to reach this milestone in clean power transition.
The milestone was highlighted during the company’s Energize 2026 conference at The Globe Tower, which gathered key stakeholders to focus on power supply management and energy efficiency solutions.
Alongside its procurement of clean power, Globe is replacing carbon-heavy diesel generators in remote provincial areas with hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems combined with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These storage systems utilize Lithium-ion and Sodium-Nickel chemistries, offering safer operation and longer service life compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. In areas where operational generators are still required, automated load management systems work to optimize fuel use and shorten engine run times.
In addition to curbing fuel consumption and emissions, the hybrid power setups help maintain cell site operations during extended power outages and severe weather conditions. This improves Globe’s capability to preserve vital communication services for communities and emergency response teams during critical periods.
“A major highlight of executing our Net Zero Strategy has been leveraging the government-initiated Retail Aggregation Program,” said Joel Agustin, senior vice president for Engineering and Network Planning at Globe.
“As the first telco in the Philippines to switch cell sites to renewable energy under RAP, converting over 1,000 sites to clean power reinforces our commitment to operational efficiency, network resilience, and disaster readiness,” Agustin added.
The shift to intelligent green infrastructure aligns with Globe’s broader Net Zero Strategy and supports the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act.
By combining clean energy sourcing with efficient power management, Globe aims to bolster its network infrastructure, providing reliable service to millions of subscribers while setting sustainable telecommunications standards across the country.
