The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) announced that the proposed P8.67-billion funding for the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Scholarship Programs under the 2027 National Expenditure Program is expected to benefit 67,504 scholars nationwide.
The projected figure marks a 3.70-percent increase over the 65,097 scholars funded under the 2026 General Appropriations Act, adding 2,407 new beneficiaries to the state-funded science and technology education pool.
The lion’s share of the allocation, totaling P7.55 billion, will go to the DOST-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). The institute manages undergraduate, master’s and doctoral scholarships, alongside advanced specialized training programs aimed at expanding the country’s research and development workforce.
The remaining P1.12 billion will support the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System, ensuring the continued operation and delivery of specialized secondary education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) across its campuses nationwide.
DBM Secretary Kim Robert De Leon emphasized that the increased funding underscores the government’s commitment to nurturing Filipino talent and building a robust talent pool of scientists, engineers, researchers and innovators capable of driving national development.
“Through the proposed FY 2027 National Budget, the government is opening more opportunities for young Filipinos to pursue STEM education and eventually apply their knowledge and expertise in areas such as agriculture, health, disaster resilience, digital transformation, industry, and other national priorities,” DBM said in a statement.
The proposed allocation forms part of the executive branch’s priority investments in human capital and technological innovation under the upcoming national budget.
