CIDG Probes Hazing, Homicide in Ateneo Deaths; Seven Persons of Interest Named

The Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said it is looking into possible hazing or homicide in the deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, with at least seven persons of interest now under scrutiny.

CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II said investigators have identified “not less than seven” individuals in connection with the case, some of whom are members of the school’s personnel. He did not disclose identities but confirmed that they are being treated as persons of interest in the ongoing probe.

The CIDG chief said the investigation is assessing whether proper precautions and oversight were observed during the team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, where the two athletes reportedly drowned. Authorities said they are also examining whether similar activities had been conducted in the past.

He added that the CIDG is considering the case as either homicide or possible hazing, depending on the outcome of the investigation.

“You will not expose an individual to big waves,” Morico said, noting that investigators are also reviewing accounts that players may have previously undergone similar training exercises. Several players have been subpoenaed as resource persons.

Meanwhile, only one of five subpoenaed Ateneo basketball management officials appeared before investigators at Camp Crame, while four others, including coach Tab Baldwin, did not attend. Ateneo, however, sent legal counsel to explain their absence.

Officials said another subpoena will be issued and warned that continued non-appearance could lead to contempt proceedings and possible filing of charges if summons remain unheeded.

Authorities emphasized that the probe remains a fact-finding investigation aimed at determining who authorized the activity and how it was conducted, rather than an immediate charging process.

The CIDG said it will continue issuing subpoenas to ensure all relevant individuals are compelled to participate in the investigation.
