The Philippine National Police (PNP) has pledged to hold accountable those who attacked its personnel during Labor Day protests in Manila, vowing swift legal action as it investigates the incident that left several officers injured.
PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said authorities have ordered a fast-tracked probe to identify the suspects, using all available evidence such as CCTV footage, body camera recordings, and videos circulating online.
“We will pursue the identification and arrest of those responsible using all available evidence, including video footage and witness accounts. We are preparing appropriate criminal charges now,” Nartatez said.
The tension unfolded along Kalaw Avenue during the May 1 demonstrations, when a masked protester suddenly struck a police officer assigned to civil disturbance management duties. The incident sparked a brief escalation before the situation was brought under control.
According to the PNP, at least seven police personnel sustained injuries during the protests, while another officer reported that a mobile phone used to document the rally was forcibly taken.
Despite the confrontation, police officers were under strict orders to observe maximum tolerance in accordance with public assembly protocols. Nartatez emphasized that while the right to peaceful protest is protected, acts of violence against law enforcers would not be tolerated.
“Peaceful assembly is a right, but violence against law enforcers will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law,” he said, stressing the need for accountability to uphold public safety and the rule of law.
The PNP chief also commended officers on the ground for maintaining composure despite provocation, highlighting their professionalism during the volatile situation.
“Maximum tolerance is not weakness. It is a demonstration of strength, control, and commitment to democratic principles,” he added, assuring continued support for personnel who uphold discipline and respect for human rights even in challenging circumstances.
