Army Chief Helps Soldier-Father Witness Daughter’s Graduation

Philippine Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete returned to his alma mater, West Visayas State University in Iloilo, as guest speaker for its recognition program, marking a homecoming from former student to Army chief.

But the event also became a personal moment for one soldier and his family.

SSg. Mark Anthony P. Robante, an enlisted personnel of the Philippine Army who had just been reassigned to the Reserve Command, was allowed to return to La Paz, Iloilo to attend the recognition ceremony of his daughter, Unah Angel Gabrielle.

Unah, a completer of the WVSU Integrated Laboratory School, finished Rank 1 with High Honors and was named A.B. Dofitas Most Outstanding Completer.

For the Robante family, the ceremony was more than an academic milestone. Like many soldier-parents, SSg. Robante faced the possibility of missing an important family occasion because of duty.

Unah was set to receive some of the highest honors in her class, but her father’s presence made the moment more meaningful.

Upon learning that SSg. Robante might miss the ceremony, Nafarrete allowed him to return home and personally witness his daughter receive her honors.

“Throughout my career, the absolute core of my leadership philosophy has been anchored on one, clear, unshakeable belief: Our strength is our personnel. It is the people who serve, sacrifice, and stand steadfast,” Nafarrete said during the program.

The gesture reflected the message of his speech: that the Army’s strength rests not only on discipline and service, but also on the welfare of the men and women behind the uniform.

For Nafarrete, the WVSU event was a return to his roots. For SSg. Robante, it was a chance to stand with his family on one of his daughter’s proudest days.

The moment highlighted the sacrifices carried by military families and the importance of leadership that recognizes soldiers not only as personnel, but as parents, spouses, and providers.
