Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr. visited troops stationed on Pag-asa Island in the Kalayaan Island Group on May 22, honoring their service in one of the country’s most critical frontlines in the West Philippine Sea.
Brawner recognized and awarded military personnel deployed on the island, citing their role in protecting Philippine sovereignty and helping maintain stability in the country’s western frontier.
He was joined during the visit by Western Command chief Vice Admiral Alan M. Javier, Western Naval Command commander Rear Admiral Vincent J. Sibala, and Kalayaan Mayor Billy Alindogan.
Brawner personally commended the troops for their professionalism, discipline, and dedication despite the difficult and isolated conditions of their deployment.
“We recognize that what you are doing here in the Kalayaan Island Group is maintaining peace in this part of our country. You are putting your lives on the line to preserve peace and protect our freedom,” Brawner said.
The AFP chief said the troops’ continued presence in Pag-asa reflects the military’s commitment to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and national interests.
The visit was part of the AFP leadership’s efforts to directly engage frontline personnel, assess conditions on the ground, and ensure that the morale, welfare, and operational readiness of deployed forces remain a priority.
The AFP said it remains committed to strengthening the capability, resilience, and overall well-being of troops serving in the Kalayaan Island Group as they continue their mission in the West Philippine Sea.
