Makabayan: Sara Impeachment is About Accountability, Not Politics

The Makabayan Bloc on Sunday called on Filipinos to support the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, insisting that the case is rooted in accountability and public interest rather than partisan politics.

In a statement, the progressive coalition said the impeachment process should be viewed as a constitutional mechanism aimed at addressing allegations of corruption and misuse of public funds.

“The impeachment is not simply pamumulitika in a time of crisis. It is a constitutional process with clear legal basis and profound public interest stakes,” the group said.

The Makabayan bloc stressed that public accountability remains essential, particularly when government funds meant for social services are allegedly misused.

“Ang pondong ninakaw at ginamit sa maling paraan ay maaaring ibalik at ilaan sa tunay na pangangailangan ng mamamayan—sa edukasyon, kalusugan, pabahay, at serbisyong panlipunan,” the coalition said.

The group rejected claims that pursuing impeachment during difficult times would only deepen political divisions, arguing instead that corruption directly worsens the hardships faced by ordinary Filipinos.

According to the bloc, every peso lost through corruption deprives vulnerable sectors of much-needed government services, including food assistance, education, housing, and healthcare.

“The fight against corruption is inseparable from the fight for the people’s welfare,” the statement read.

Makabayan also dismissed accusations of selective accountability, saying its calls for investigation and accountability apply regardless of political affiliation.

“Pinapanagot natin si Marcos, pinapanagot din natin si Duterte. Walang sinasanto, walang pinoprotektahan,” the coalition said, referring to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the vice president.

The bloc maintained that the allegations against Duterte involve serious issues, including the alleged questionable use of confidential funds and the supposed lack of transparency in government expenditures.

“These are not trivial matters. They strike at the integrity of public office and the trust that citizens place in those who serve,” the group added.

Makabayan further urged the public not to remain silent in the face of alleged abuse of power and misuse of public resources.

“Kailangang ipakita ng taumbayan na hindi na puwede ang dati. Hindi na puwedeng manatiling bulag at pipi habang nagpapakasasa sa kapangyarihan at yaman ang mga nasa puwesto,” the coalition said.

The group also called on Congress to continue the impeachment proceedings with fairness and urgency while carefully examining the evidence presented in the case.

At the same time, it encouraged Filipinos to actively participate in public discussions and mobilizations related to the impeachment process, saying public involvement would be crucial in ensuring accountability and transparency in government.
